Technology & History

Luxeon

Philips Lumileds Lighting Company is the manufacturer of Luxeon, a high-power light-emitting diode (LED). It is a division of Philips.
Luxeon is the trade name for high power LEDs that dissipate 1
watt or more. Models include Luxeon I, Luxeon III, Luxeon V, Luxeon K2, Luxeon Star, and Luxeon Rebel. Luxeon LEDs produce powerful light, and are a popular choice among flashlight manufacturers. They are available in many colors, including white.

Nichia

The Nichia Corporation is a Japanese chemical manufacturing company that is most widely known for producing phosphors, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

The Nichia Corporation was founded by Nobuo Ogawa in 1956. One of his famous decisions was to support Shuji Nakamura (1954- ) to do research on gallium nitride light-emitting diodes when it was generally considered a very risky business. It turned out to be a great success. However, the company achieved a certain amount of notoriety for awarding a bonus of ¥20,000 Yen (US$180) to Shuji Nakamura for his invention of the first high brightness blue-light LED, which was based on gallium nitride. Nichia later settled out of court with Nakamura for ¥840 million Yen (US$7 million), in what was then the highest bonus ever awarded by a Japanese company.

The watt (symbol: W) is a derived unit of power in the International System of Units (SI). It measures rate of energy conversion. One watt is equivalent to 1 joule (J) of energy per second.

Sufix 832

Sufix's new 832 superline is out of the bag and expected to hit the stores by end of 2010.

This new superline is a combination of Dyneema Fibers & GORE® Polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) with Sufix's R8 precision braiding process to produce a line with high abrasion resistance, noise & vibration reduction and higher knot strength.

The nickname '832' comes from its construction of 8 fibers at 32 weaves per inch - giving it the boasting rights of being the strongest, most durable small diameter braid in the market. This was based on tests comparing a 20lb competitor braid at 1000 cycles which resulted in 40% reduction in breaking strength, with 832 of 20lb breaking strain put through 1000 cycles with breaking strength retention of 95%. Interestingly, the former also showed significant visible abraision compared to 832 which showed no signs of abraision wear.

So what's up with using GORE® anyway? Most of us consumers would be more familiar with GORE-TEX® fabrics, a unique material that is waterproof and breathable. At the very heart of these innovative products is the versatile polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). According to the GORE® Website, founder Bob Gore discovered that rapidly stretching PTFE (expanded PTFE or ePTFE) under right conditions created a very strong, microporous material that has amazing properties of:

High strength to weight ratio
Chemical inertness (not degrading or losing strength after exposure to saltwater, solvents, lubricants, etc)
High thermal & chemical resistance
Low flammability
Low coefficient of friction (good news for those looking for a smooth, slippery feel line - good castability here!)
Low water absorption
And even immune to UV radiation!

Available in Neon Lime & Low-Vis Green
The composition of Dyneema (green) fibers & GORE® ePTFE (white) creates the strongest, most abrasion resistant, fastest sinking, UV protected, roundest braided line on the market today

EVA
Ethylene vinyl acetate (also known as EVA) is the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. The weight percent vinyl acetate usually varies from 10 to 40%, with the remainder being ethylene.

It is a polymer that approaches elastomeric materials in softness and flexibility, yet can be processed like other thermoplastics. The material has good clarity and gloss, barrier properties, low-temperature toughness, stress-crack resistance, hot-melt adhesive water proof properties, and resistance to UV radiation. EVA has little or no odor and is competitive with rubber and vinyl products in many electrical applications.

A Ghillie suit, also known as a yowie suit, or camo tent, is a type of camouflage clothing designed to resemble heavy foliage. Typically, it is a net or cloth garment covered in loose strips of burlap, cloth or twine, sometimes made to look like leaves and twigs, and optionally augmented with scraps of foliage from the area.
Snipers,[1] hunters and nature photographers may wear a ghillie suit to blend into their surroundings and conceal themselves from enemies or targets. The suit gives the wearer's outline a three-dimensional breakup, rather than a linear one. When manufactured correctly, the suit will move in the wind in the same way as surrounding foliage

Materials

MERINOWOLLE
The finest Australian wool guarantees dry skin and provides excellent thermal and moisture control properties. Soft Merino wool has all the positive charateristics of wool such as wicking ability, quick absorption and evaporation but without the itch.

ISOLFIL® - 100% polypropylene yarn
Premium quality Italian polypropylene yarn of Meraklon fibre. Its thermal conductivity is the lowest of all fibres and as a result it is the best in protecting the body from swings of temperature - it maintains a constant temperature. The moisture absorption coefficient of Isolfil® is the lowest of all and therefore it is able to take sweat outside the sock and thus to prevent any annoying feelings at any strain and weather.

PROFILEN® - 100% (PTFE) polytetrafluoroethylene
High-tech fibre with lowest amount of friction. It is non-flammable, repels dirt and water and is physiologically neutral. Socks reinforced with Profilen® are resistant and protect the wearer against blisters. This fibre also has excellent insulating properties.

COOLMAX® - 100% shaped polyester
Special four-duct polyester fibre is water-repellent, non-absorbing and it will take any moisture from the sock to the upper layer of the material very fast. There, Coolmax® will take the moisture in form of vapour (by evaporation) away very quickly, more quickly than other fabrics, thus regulating the body temperature. The excellent permeability of the fibre will provide for the thermoregulation effect of the LASTING high-performance socks. In result, the performance and comforts of a sportsman are getting improved.

OUTLAST® – 100% acrylic
An intelligent patented acrylic fibre with integrated microcapsules, called Thermocules®. When the foot overheats, the Outlast® fibre will cool the foot. When the foot gets cold, the fibre will release stored heat back and make the foot feel warmer. Outlast® products improve the comfort significantly. This effect is obtained due to its high heat of fusion. The temperature of fusion is actually in range of 35 - 37°C.

X-STATIC® - 85% polyamide + 15% silver
A polyamide fibre coated with a layer of pure natural silver. The best anti-microbial protection that will never fade out. X-Static® will continuously emit the silver ions to disintegrate the germs´ molecular structure eliminating by the same hydrogen in DNA. The germ unable to breathe will eventually die. Another unique property of X-Static® fibre is the ability to absorb static and electric discharges. Therefore, it is antistatic. There are more than 7 000 nerve ends on the sole, the body uses the nerves to emit electric signals. Since silver is best conductive of all elements, X-Static® will absorb the signals as well. As the electric discharges pass through silver, a magnetic field is formed around the sock and improves the blood circulation.

THERMOLITE ® - 100% polyester
Thermolite provides warmth and comfort without weight. Excellent moisture management. Hollow-core fiber technology provides the most warmth at the lightest weight. It wicks perspiration away from the body up to 40% faster than the leading thermal wear fabric. Resistant to mildew and odor retention.

POLYCOLON – 100% polypropylene
Finest quality polypropylene yarn from Schoeller Austria. Polycolon® maintains your body’s performance and keeps you dry for longer, no matter how much you perspire, by wicking moisture away from your foot. It is very light and durable. It is hydrophobic material and dries very fast.

ISOLWOOL® - 50 % polypropylene + 50% wool
A perfect half-and-half combination of Merino wool Meraklon polypropylene. It enhances mechanical resistance of wool. The socks made of the material are admirable for resistance and at the same time, for exceptional heat comfort. Socks made of ISOLWOOL® are as much as five times more resistant than sock of 100% wool. Thermal protection is very high owing to the Meraklon polypropylene insulation capacity and the structural properties of wool. The combination is a guarantee of an ideal body temperature even under the severest climatic conditions.

BB ACRYL® – 100% acrylic
Lasting developed premium Acrylic yarn that provide you with extra ordinary comfort and protection. It is designed for improved blister protection and excellent insulation.

MERYL SKINLIFE® - 100% polyamide
Meryl Skinlife® is bacteriostatic nylon fibre. It maintains a natural balance on the skin, regardless of activity level. The human skin normally has a bacteria presence. A high level of bacteria, as well as a complete absence, creates various problems (allergy, odour, illness etc.). Meryl Skinlife® does not decrease the bacterial level lower than what is normally present on the skin.

TERMOSWED LIGHT
has been designed for active people who like to go hiking and enjoy moving around. It was especially important that moisture would be completely wicked away from the body. Our unique two-layer system of polypropylene and cotton allows ideal moisture management. The lightweight and flexible material ensures a pleasant and snug feeling when wearing these garments. TermoSwed Light is suitable for temperatures between -15°C and +10°C depending on activity level.

TERMOSWED PLUS
is an extremely high-quality, two-layered undergarment with excellent fit. The fine rib polypropylene terry cloth inner absorbs moisture and wicks it away from the skin. The cotton outer absorbs the moisture and moves it on to the next clothing layer (e.g. fleece). This keeps the body warm and dry. The fabric weighs 275g/sqm and is made of 66% polypropylene, 25% cotton and 9% nylon. Tested by the Textile Research Institute Hohenstein, Test-No. 87.4.1536.

Forprene®

Forprene® is a Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) and more precisely, it is a Vulcanised Thermoplastic Elastormer (TPV). It is made up of an elastomeric phase (dynamically vulcanised EPDM), which is deeply dispersed in a polyolefinic thermoplastic matrix, whose combination determines a real plasto-elastomeric alloy characterised by high performances and extremely easy processability.
Its thermoplastic matrix allows Forprene® to be processed in an easy and unexpensive way by means of traditional technologies used for thermoplastic materials and to be fully recyclable whereas its elastomeric phase features typically rubber-like specifications such as elastic recovery and softness.

Kraton
- a soft flexible thermoplastic polymer handle material. It is most often used as an inlay on knife handles. It provides for a better gripping surface. It is also used by itself, as a tang coating handle material.

D2 steel is an air hardening, high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel. It has high wear and abrasion resistant properties. It is heat treatable and will offer a hardness in the range 55-62 HRC, and is machinable in the annealed condition. D2 steel shows little distortion on correct hardening. D2 steel’s high chromium content gives it mild corrosion resisting properties in the hardened condition.

AUS-8 steel.
A Japanese stainless steel, with surperb toughness and good edge holding capabilities. This steel is fairly easy to sharpen and generally low cost with great corrosion resistance.

Micarta: there are two forms of micarta: linen and paper fabric. Linen micarta is the strongest and most popular. Layers of linen cloths or paper fabric are soaked in a phoenolic resin. The resulting material is lightweight, strong and visually appealing. Micarta does not normally have a surface texture. It can be either bead blasted or polished.
